Editable floor plans: turn an image into geometry you can change

"Editable" is the most over-promised word in floor-plan software. A lot of tools hand you a slick 3D picture and call it done — but you can't move a wall in a picture. This is the difference that actually matters: an image and a render are things you look at; editable geometry is a plan you can change.

Why editability is the whole point

Once a plan is real geometry, you can:

  • Move a wall and watch the rooms update.
  • Resize or relabel a room, or merge two.
  • Relocate a door or window.
  • Measure anything to real dimensions.
  • Export it — to CAD, a 3D model, or any format your next tool needs.

If you can't do those, you don't have an editable plan — you have a nicer-looking picture.

How an image becomes editable geometry

The bridge is vectorization: AI reads the pixels and detects walls, rooms, doors, and windows as distinct objects, turning a flat picture into a structured model. You fix anything it misreads in an editor, and from that single model everything else follows — CAD, 3D, renders, exports. It's also what separates a converter from a generator: a converter digitizes the plan you already have.

The honest part: accuracy, and when you still need CAD

We'd rather set the right expectation than oversell. AI reads clean plans well and gives you a strong, editable starting point — but it isn't magic. You'll correct the odd misread wall in the editor (the export always matches what you see). And for permitting or construction, final drawings should still be based on surveyed, verified measurements. An AI conversion is a fast head start, not a replacement for a professional survey.
